Ligament Laxity & Rotational Instability

Loose ligaments allowing extra joint movement in the neck.

Understanding ligament laxity & rotational instability

Ligaments hold the neck’s joints in place. When they are stretched or loose — from injury or a connective tissue condition — joints can move more than they should, sometimes causing pain, clicking, or a sense of instability.

Symptoms you may notice

  • Clicking or shifting sensations in the neck
  • Pain with rotation or sustained positions
  • A feeling of giving way
  • Muscle tightness from guarding

Why an individual evaluation matters

Laxity can be localized after an injury or generalized with hypermobility conditions. Muscles often overwork to compensate, which is why strengthening and careful management matter. Forceful manipulation can worsen lax joints.

Where One Life’s care may fit

Dr. Jon can assess neck mechanics with an examination and imaging when appropriate, and discuss whether One Life’s specific, low-force approach is suitable. Care often works best alongside strengthening and, for generalized laxity, medical management.

When to seek medical care

Seek urgent medical care for new weakness, numbness, trouble walking, or bladder or bowel changes.

This is not a complete list of warning signs. If you think you may be experiencing an emergency, call 911 rather than wait for an office appointment.

Educational information, not a diagnosis or individualized medical advice. Care recommendations and results vary. Discuss treatment risks, benefits, and alternatives with your provider.

Questions about ligament laxity & rotational instability

Why do my neck muscles always feel tight?

Muscles often guard to stabilize loose joints. Treating only the tightness misses the underlying mechanics.

Is cracking my own neck a problem?

Habitual self-manipulation can aggravate lax joints. It is worth discussing with your clinician.
